The human intestinal tract harbours a diverse and complex microbial community which plays a central role in human health. It has been estimated that our gut contains in the range of 1000 bacterial species and 100-fold more genes than are found in the human genome (A genome is an organism’s complete set of DNA, including all of its genes). Our gut harbours a complex community of over 100 trillion microbial cells which influence human physiology, metabolism, nutrition (diet) and immune function (defence mechanism in order to prevent diseases) while disruption to the gut microbiota (bacteria that harbours our gut), has been linked with gastrointestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and obesity*. We now know that our gut microbiome coevolves with us and that changes to this population can have major consequences, both beneficial and harmful, for human health.

Our goal at The Gut Guys is to bring awareness to the gut microbiota and explore its contributions to the human body using scientific literature and journals.
